EVIDENCE FOR THE HETEROGENEITY OF GLYCOL LIGNIN

Glycol and kraft lignins have been fractionated by solvent extraction using a sequence of organic solvents of increasing hydrogen-bonding capability. A comparison between the fractions from both lignins has been made in terms of yield, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and molecular weight distribution. In addition, the glycol lignin and its fractions were further characterized by methoxyl and total hydroxyl group determination, as well as by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The heterogeneity of glycol lignin is particularly demonstrated. More importantly, 26% of this lignin has been found to consist of a low molecular weight fraction soluble in ethyl acetate, which is richer in guaiacyl units and hydroxyl groups than the other fractions. This fraction is not present in Indulin AT kraft lignin.
