摘要
Development of microelectrophoretic techniques allows for the first time an examination of Mendelian processes and natural selection in the early life stages of marine bivalve mollusks. Using these techniques, we found heterozygosity at a glucose-6-phosphate isomerase locus (Gpi) to be strongly associated with the fitness of larval and juvenile oysters (Crassostrea virginia) from a selectively bred strain (Rutgers, CXF MSX resistant). Among progeny of two types of crosses (paired crosses and a mass spawning), Gpiheterozygotes exhibited greater survival and faster growth than the corresponding homozygotes. Linked recessive genes appear to be responsible for the advantage associated with Gpi heterozygotes.
