Heart diseases that cause stroke and systemic embolism are often detectable before such complications occur. Is a program of primary prevention with antithrombotic therapy effective and safe in these patients? And, if a patient has already had a stroke, can a second one be prevented? Dr Anderson reviews the results of several prospective studies and presents recommendations based on current knowledge.
