The period 1974-1978 has seen a dramatic increase in the scope and versatility of high-performance liquid chromatography (hplc), due largely to the availability of the necessary instrumentation and to improvements in the efficiency and nature of column packing materials. The technique has been widely adopted in the natural products area, but the results of this work have been scattered throughout a large number of journals and it has been difficult for an investigator to find suitable conditions for a particular separation. This review is thus an attempt to summarize the literature dealing with the applications of hplc to secondary metabolites from 1974 to June 1978. © 1979, American Chemical Society.
