A dynamic method of measuring the volumetric mass transfer coefficient of oxygen, k(L)a, in gas-liquid reactors is presented which consists in monitoring simultaneously the pressure and oxygen concentration changes. The concentration change due to pressure change is invoked by temporarily closing the gas outlet. This makes the method suitable for measurements on large-scale vessels. The reliability of the method is tested in coalescent (water) and noncoalescent (0.5 M Na2SO4 solution) batches by comparing the obtained results with those of independent methods, and by comparing the results from pure oxygen and air absorption. Besides the complex regression method, a simple moment method is used for the evaluation of k(L)a from air absorption. Since simultaneous nitrogen interfacial transport is neglected in moment method, this evaluation is suitable for k(L)a < 0.1 s-1, where the error involved does not exceed 10%.
