During the growth of Staphylococcus aureus cultures, the catalase activity becomes intense when the O2 tension in the medium progressively decreases. The catalase activated at a lower value of the electrode potential probably develops due to changes in the structure of oxidases attaining an oxidative-reductive character. When such a culture of high catalase activity is inoculated into a fresh medium, reorganization of the enzyme occurs due to the high O2 tension. The process proceeds during the lag period which may explain that the catalase level in the cell of the inoculum prolongs the lag period proportionally.
