OPTICAL-DAMAGE IN NONLINEAR-OPTICAL POLYMER WAVE-GUIDES

摘要
Intensity of transmitted light through NLO polymer waveguides significantly decreased during continuous operation with a low-power near infrared laser. Results of an investigation of the optical damage of the polymer waveguides are presented for several NLO polymers. The damage was found to originate from a reduction of the index of refraction of the NLO polymers in the waveguides and subsequent loss of optical beam confinement in the waveguides. The decrease of the refractive index of the polymers is a result of photo-degradation of NLO chromophores through an interaction with the near infrared light and dissolved oxygen molecules in the polymers.
