摘要：

The paper considers the approach of a PC manufacturer, Research Machines, in its use of ASICs in the Nimbus PC186 computers. Gate arrays and PLDs have proved effective in providing increased functionality without increasing cost, and for retaining design flexibility, which is an important issue for PC compatibility. The impact of using ASICs on the manufacturing and purchasing sides of the business is also discussed. © 1990.
