摘要
Models for erosion in ceramics are summarized, and recent results for the combined role of target and erodent material properties are presented. Using indentation fracture mechanics concepts for crack initiation, a new approach to erodent versus target properties is developed that points to erodent fragmentation as an important consideration. Hardness, toughness, and flaw characteristics are pertinent for fragmentation phenomena. Fracture toughness emerges as an important property. Toughness is not always easy to characterize because of crack growth resistance behavior in microstructurally complex ceramics.
