PHOTOELECTRON SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF YBA2CU4O8 - COMPARISON WITH YBA2CU3O7-Y

We performed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements on YBa2Cu4O8 and YBa2Cu3O7-y (y≈0 and y≈1). The Cu 2p-XPS spectra showed that there were no appreciable differences between spectra of YBa2Cu4O8 and of YBa2Cu3O7. The coincidence was analyzed with considering two kinds of Cu-O clusters. Binding energy shifts were observed between Ba core level spectra of YBa2Cu4O8 and of YBa2Cu3O7. The amount of the shift was indepedent of the kinds of core level and in good agreement with the difference between the calculated Madelung potentials at Ba site. The shift in the Y core level spectra was negligible. This fact was not explained by only the difference between Madelung potentials. It is probably that the effect of covalency on Y site is relatively large. © 1990.
