摘要
This paper presents an image compression method using a finite-state vector quantizer (FSVQ) with derailment compensation. The derailment problem in conventional FSVQ systems is discussed first. Then a novel scheme is presented to overcome the problem. In this scheme, each state is partitioned into K Voronoi regions. The corresponding region codebook is designed individually. A simple initial classifier based on a mean codebook is also presented to determine the state and the region for an input vector. The results show that the derailment problem has been completely attacked. Experimental results indicate that the new FSVQ system is very computationally efficient and achieves good picture quality at an average rate of 0.33 b per pixel (bpp).
