General spectroscopic processes associated with the use of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) microscopy to examine paint samples are described. These are then related to various sample preparation options. Full experimental procedures are given for eleven methods of sample preparation with observations as to their applicability to various sample conditions including size, degree of fragmentation and substrate. Guidelines are provided to assist caseworkers in optimising a particular sample examination.
