RETROGRESSION OF LANDSLIDES IN SENSITIVE MUDDY SEDIMENTS - REPLY

Carson concentrates on the problem of predicting the distance of retrogression of landslides in sensitive muddy sediments, discussed by Mitchell, and illustrates and expands on other points by reference to the May 1978 landslide at Ste. Madeleine de Rigand, Quebec. The main conclusions to emerge are that the sensitivity of the clay involved is of major importance in determining the distance through which an earth flow retrogresses, but that both qualitative and quantitative judgements are necessary in estimating this distance. -J.N.Hutchinson
