A temperature controller has been constructed for a pumped superfluid He-4 bath, which, over the range 1.2 - 1.8 K, has a long-term regulation better than 1 mK, improving to 100-mu-K after 24 h. The feedback system acts on the pumping line conductance, and achieves regulation without any increase in liquid helium consumption, otherwise inevitable with standard heater regulators. The small signal transfer functions of all the elements constituting the regulator are calculated and then used to evaluate the stability and the performance of the feedback loop. The experimental results are then discussed on the basis of this model.
