THERAPEUTIC VALUE OF HIDROSMIN IN THE TREATMENT OF VENOUS DISORDERS OF THE LOWER-LIMBS

In a double-blind, controlled clinical trial, patients with chronic venous insufficiency of the lower limbs were treated with hidrosmin and compared with placebo. Sixteen patients received 200 mg of hidrosmin three times daily for a period of 23.4 +/- 8.0 days and 12 patients received placebo for 28.1 +/- 7.4 days, also three times daily. Statistical evaluation carried out on clinical results of the seven symptoms detected more frequently in both groups (pain, heavy legs, local tension, pruritus, cramps, paresthesia, and edema) showed that hidrosmin was better than placebo. When the clinical importance of results was considered, it was shown that 75% of patients treated with hidrosmin had an improvement in more than half the symptoms, while only 25% showed this improvement with placebo. The differences between hidrosmin and placebo reached a high degree of significance (P < 0.01). No side effects were detected in either group of patients.
