ELECTRON STATE OF SODIUM ATOMS ADSORBED ON TUNGSTEN AND EFFECT OF ELECTRIC FIELD ON ADSORPTION ENERGY

摘要
The effect of high electric fields on the equilibrium concentrations of sodium atoms adsorbed on the (110), (112), (100) and (111) planes of tungsten tip has been investigated using field emission microscopy. The changes of the adsorption energy versus the electric field strength are calculated. In the field range from - 3 × 107 to 3 × 107 V/cm these dependences are found to be linear, indicating that the adsorption bond is characterized by a permanent dipole moment. The relationships between the dipole moments and surface concentrations of Na adatoms on different planes are obtained. The upper limit of the polarizability of Na adatom is estimated to be 5 × 10-24 cm3. © 1969.
