摘要
The high volume output of a defunctioning loop ileostomy after rectal excision and anastomosis may lead to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance if not properly managed. Although chronic losses may be seen, the early postoperative period remains the most hazardous with regard to acute fluid and electrolyte losses for the patient with a defunctioning ileostomy1–3. A prospective study was therefore conducted to determine the period and severity of excessive ileostomy loss. Copyright © 1995 British Journal of Surgery Society Ltd.
