The intensity-time behavior observed during electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) for multiple cycles and for cases where one of the radical ions is unstable has been investigated. Working curves, obtained by digital computer simulation, are presented which allow determination of the rate constants for the decomposition of the radical ions. The half-lifes of the cation radicals of 9,10-diphenylanthracene, 1,3,6,8-tetraphenylpyrene, and rubrene were determined experimentally. The maximum ECL intensity, obtained by passing alternating current through the cell, was, in all cases, a linear function of the concentration of the electroactive species. © 1969, American Chemical Society.
