Cramer's (1988) panel data were re‐examined using linear structural relationships analysis (LISREL) with latent variables to determine the nature of the cross‐lagged association between self‐esteem and the Rogerian facilitative qualities in a close current relationship. While the associations between self‐esteem and level of acceptance, empathy and congruence seemed spurious, unconditionality of acceptance and total facilitativeness were significantly positively related to later self‐esteem, implying that these associations were unidirectional in nature. 1990 The British Psychological Society
