SPAWNING, LARVAL DEVELOPMENT AND MIGRATION OF ARENICOLA MARINA UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS IN THE WESTERN WADDEN SEA

Field observations on the early life history of Arenicola marina L. in tidal areas near Texel between summer 1977 and spring 1978 generally agree with results of laboratory studies of the early development of the species, as reported by Farke & Berghuis (1979). Early larval stages occurred during two periods (September up to the middle of October and from the end of November up to the end of December). They were numerous in the sediment around the horizontal part of the female's burrow. Later larval development during winter proceeded in places sheltered against wave action, with a definite sedimentation regime, and away from the adults. Postlarval stages were found in the spring plankton of the western Wadden Sea. © 1979.
