STABILIZATION OF MERCURY CUPRATES BY BISMUTH - THE SUPERCONDUCTORS HG1-XBIXBA2CAM-1CUMO2M+2+DELTA

The synthesis of the ''Ba-Hg'' based cuprates at normal pressures is a difficult problem especially for the 1223 phase that reaches a T(c) of 133 K. In order to stabilize these oxides, the substitution of bismuth for mercury has been studied. A series of superconductors Hg1-xBixBa2Cam-1CumO2m+2+delta has been synthesized at normal pressures with m = 1, 3, and 2.5 and with x ranging from 0.1 to 0.2. These oxides, that display the ''1201'', ''1223'', and intergrowth ''1212-1223'' structures, exhibit for the first one a maximum T(c onset) of 84 K and for the two others a T(c onset) of 130 K. Attempts to prepare the 1212 phase (n = 2) were unsuccessful, but this phase could be stabilized by doping with yttrium, leading to the superconductor Hg0.8Bi0.2Ba2Ca0.8Y0.2Cu2O6+delta that exhibits a broad transition below 128 K.
