The recent identification and purification of anandamide (arachidonyl ethanol-amide) (ANA), the putative endogenous ligand for the cannabinoid receptor provided us the chance to investigate its effects on pituitary hormone secretion. We compared the effects of Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of the marihuana with ANA after chronic i.p. administration in adult male rats. Both drugs altered serum levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin and growth hormone. Their effects seemed to be mainly inhibitory.
