Two new types of Ba-free copper oxides of the "223" [(Eu,Ce)2(Eu,Ba)2Cu3O8+z type] structure have been successfully synthesized. One of them is (Ho,Ce)2Sr2Cu3O8+z and the other (Eu,Ce)2(Eu,Sr)2Cu3-xMxO8+z (M = Fe,Co and Al). All the samples are nearly single phase and of the tetragonal crystal structure. Only samples of (Eu,Ce)2(Eu,Sr)2Cu2.75M0.25O8+z (M = Fe, Co and Al) and (Eu,Ce)2(Eu,Sr)2Cu2.5Al0.5O8+z exhibit superconductivity, other samples being nonsuperconducting. It is likely that (Ho,Ce)2Sr2Cu3O8+z does not exhibit superconductivity according to the empirical relation between T(c) and the average cation radius in the fluorite layer. The annihilation of superconductivity in the samples with high Al content is caused by the decrease in the carrier density.
