AN ONLINE SYSTEM FOR PAPER-MACHINE CONDITION MONITORING - SHORT-TERM VARIATIONS WILL BE NEXT CONCERN

PFI's Instrumentation and Process Control group has many years experience in troubleshooting paper machines. This group has developed an on-line condition monitoring system which analyses variations in moisture, caliper, basis weight, vibration and pressure. This system is installed at A/S Follum Fabrikker PM2, Norway, and during 1988 the system has helped the mill to reduce the level of vibration within the press section and to find various sources for quality variations in the paper. The development has been acquired by J.M. Voith GmbH, Heidenheim, Germany, and further improved by applying its extensive experience with paper machinery diagnostics. The system is now being marketed by Voith under the product name VTM 2000, Voith Technology Monitor.
