摘要
Objective: The ageing population in Singapore is expected to grow to 25% by 2030. As the incidence of late-onset major psychiatric problems might be increasing, there was numerous psychopathology that was associated with the depression, including catatonia. This case report aims to demystify the impression that catatonia is disappearing in the developed countries. Methods: We reported two cases of catatonia secondary to major depressive disorder presenting within six weeks of each other in a large teaching hospital in Singapore. Results: These two cases highlight the occurrence of catatonia in late-onset depressive disorder requiring early recognition and prompt treatment. Conclusion: Cases of major depression with catatonia cannot be overlooked in an elderly population. Catatonia increases premature death, including suicide. Timely identification and treatment are crucial to prevent medical complications and suicide.
