Scintillating crystals in a radiation environment

The unique physics capability of a crystal calorimeter is the result of their superp energy resolution, hermetic coverage and fine granularity. However, its energy resolution can only be maintained in situ if the crystal is sufficiently radiation hard. This report summarizes the performance of large size crystals (CsI, BaF2, CeF3, BGO and PbWO4) in a radiation environment. Technical approaches to solve radiation damage problem are discussed, with particular emphasis on crystal quality control in the growing process. An approach to solve the radiation damage problem by implementing optical bleaching in situ is elaborated.
