CHARGE-TRANSFER COMPLEXES OF SULFA DRUGS WITH TRINITROBENZENE DERIVATIVES

Charge transfer (CT) complexes were prepared by the reaction of some sulfa drugs and trinitrobenzene derivatives. The CT complexes were investigated using IR and electronic absorption spectroscopy. The type of complex formed depends mainly on the characteristics of the acceptor and to a less extent on the type of donor used. The complexes with acidic acceptor, picric acid, are formed through pi-pi* electronic transition from the donor to acceptor, meanwhile a proton is transferred, in almost ah cases, from the acceptor to the donor. With nonacidic accepters, the CT complexes are formed only through electron transfer. The ionization potentials of the sulfa drugs were determined from UV studies. The effect of the ionization potentials of sulfa drugs on the conductance of their charge transfer complexes with picric acid at different temperatures was also investigated.
