From the concept of work to that of energy: Thomson's contribution

摘要
If the emergence of the principle of energy conservation mainly rested on the transition from force to work, the next stage involving work and energy needs to be explicated. Thomson's work on mechanical effect and its concepts were a great part of it. Moreover, William Thomson's general view made it possible to grasp the concept in its full sense, although it gave rise to misunderstandings and contradictions.
