The behavior of aluminum pins (high purity aluminum, aluminum alloy 1100 and Al-1at.%Mg) sliding in vacuum against rotating disks of M2 tool steel was investigated for a range of sliding speeds. Wear of these ductile materials occurs mainly by extrusion at the exit side of the wear scar. Friction at steady state is similar for all three materials. For high purity aluminum at low sliding speeds, the spacing of lamellae which appear on the surface is the same as the spacing between microbands revealed by transmission electron microscopy. This and other observations of deformation substructure can be accommodated by Rosenfield's theory of shear instability in sliding wear. Recrystallization is also observed, but it does not seem to have a large effect on the friction and wear behavior for the conditions used in these tests.
