Fuses have been in vogue for over 100 years, and today are still the most widely used devices for the safe and economic overcurrent protection of electric circuits. Many of the advantages of fuses are of long standing, and this article presents an up date on ten advantages of fuses, concentrating on low-voltage applications. This is followed by some recent developments associated with low-voltage fuses. The ten advantages of fuses are safe operation, safe replacement, effective isolation, current limitation, motor-circuit protection, protection against indirect contact, overcurrent protection, international standardization, discrimination, and high breaking capacity.
