YOUNG MODULUS OF THIN ZRO2 FILMS OBTAINED BY THE SOL-GEL METHOD

Young's modulus values of thin ZrO2 films obtained by the sol-gel dipping technique were determined by a modified vibrating reed method. After dipping, the samples (microscope glass slides) were heat treated at various temperatures to study the effect of coating dentification on film modulus. ZrO2 films treated at temperatures as low as 490-degrees-C attain a Young's modulus value of at least 80% of that of dense zirconia obtained by traditional methods. The modulus for film treated at 300-degrees-C was calculated to be about 30 GPa.
