Experiments were conducted to study combustion-assisted attrition in a 41 mm diameter and 1.2 m tall, open-top, turbulent fluidized-bed apparatus. The difference between the observed weight loss rate and the burning rate calculated from the gas analysis is taken as the attrition rate. Both mechanical and combustion-assisted attrition were measured. Results are compared with available data on bubbling fluidized beds. The effect of oxygen concentration on the combustion-assisted attrition was also studied.
