CHARACTERIZATION OF THE INVIVO NITRATE REDUCTASE-ACTIVITY IN THE ROOTS AND LEAVES OF EICHHORNIA-CRASSIPES

Studies of in vivo nitrate reductase activity (NRA) in Eichhornia crassipes showed that adding 5% isopropanol gave highest NRA in all parts of the plant, but it was also necessary to flush the assay media containing leaves with N1 to obtain the maximal activity. There were differences in the pH optima for NRA, the root optimum being 6·5 leaf 7·5-8·0, and the petiole showing a major peak at 6·5 and a minor peak at 7·.5-8·0. Possible significances of these differences are discussed. © 1990 Annals of Botany Company.
