摘要
Stress concentration refers to the tendency of the stress within a solid to localize and intensify under certain conditions of loading and geometry. From the point of view of engineering practice, such localization regularly takes place at a surface, thus suggesting that stress concentration at interior points of a solid is either absent or insignificant. At the same time, it is taken for granted that classical elasticity theory does not yield a maximum principle for quantities of physical interest. The purpose of the present article is to review and augment the counterexamples which demonstrate that a relative maximum in the largest principal stress is indeed possible. New results which facilitate the construction of such examples are presented.
