A study is described in which the horizontal stratification model in RELAP5/MOD2 is assessed by comparison with separate effects experiments. This model is designed to describe the flow of two-phase mixture through a small diameter off-take connected to a horizontal pipe containing a stratified flow. Comparison with the test data shows that the model systematically under-predicts the quality in the off-take branch. Improved correlations for the off-take quality are derived and it is shown that inclusion of these correlations in a modified code version gives improved agreement with the separate effects tests, and also with an integral test in the LOFT facility. © 1990.
