Diffusion of submicron particles suspended in a turbulent flow is studied. The Lagrangian equation of motion of particles in an isotropic turbulent flow field including the Brownian effect is considered. The spectral method is used and analytical expressions for particle response statistics are derived. Variations of particle Brownian and turbulent diffusivities with particle size, density ratio, and flow Reynolds number are studied, and the relative importance of Brownian and turbulence effects are discussed. It is shown that turbulence effects generally dominate Brownian effects. © 1990 United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority.
