Over a one year period, 896 soft-shell clams from 22 locations along the Bay of Fundy coast of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and the Eastern shore of Nova Scotia were examined for the possible occurrence of sarcomas. Biopsies revealed disseminated sarcomas in clams from five sites around the Bay of Fundy; the first records for Canadian waters. The data were insufficient to show whether there was any correlation between incidence of sarcomas and either pollution or recent declines in clam abundance.
