FRAMEWORK FOR DEVELOPMENT OF CONCEPTUAL DATA MODELING TECHNIQUES

The objective of conceptual data modelling is to produce an abstract model of the data required by a corporation to meet its information needs. Hence the conceptual data model (CDM) is critical to the success of a corporation's information system. Use of the abstract model is highly dependent on the criteria established within the CDM methodology. Review of current CDM methodologies has, however, shown the lack of a standard set of CDM criteria. The paper presents a framework for the development of CDM criteria. The development of these criteria provides a basis for the comparison of current CDM methodologies as well as a framework for the development of new CDM methodologies. While this set is not all inclusive, it can provide a basis for further development and discussion.
