A sequence of Cu-2p XPS spectra has been measured for a CuO sample converted progressively to Cu2O under increasing temperatures of reduction (up to 1000-degrees-C). The experimental data are compared with a cluster configuration interaction model, especially in the case of CuO: we take into account the multiplet coupling between a Cu-3d hole and a Cu-2p core hole as well as the anisotropic hybridization between the 3d hole and O-2p valence band holes. Within our model we are able to fit the experimental spectra of CuO and explain the tendency towards Cu2O.
