The story of the development of the differential analyzer, a prototype computer, since its beginnings at the MIT in 1927, until it was overtaken by the first real-time electronic digital computer in 1951, is recounted. The contributions of Vannevar Bush and his colleagues to the development of the machine, their successes and failures are also described. Refs.
