The theme of the next World Council of Churches General Assembly takes the form of a plea to God for reform of this world. This article sets out to plumb the depth and dimensions of that theme. What is the meaning of the invocation of God? Significantly enough, it is the transformation of the "world" that is prayed for, not that of the individual, which, incidentally, is a traditional concern for oecumene, albeit dissonant in post-modern society. Contemporary economics and politics lack any sustainable proposal for the future of humanity. Can the churches fill this gap?
