The selection of a base unit is an important decision in the process of discourse analysis. A number of different units form the bases of discourse analysis systems designed for dealing with structural characteristics of second language discourse. This paper reviews the more prominent of such units and provides arguments in favour of the selection of one in particular-the utterance. © 1990 Oxford University Press.
