EFFECTS OF ILLUMINATION ON OPEN-FIELD BEHAVIOR IN MICE

Assessed the effects of rearing and test illumination on the open-field behavior of 2 inbred stains of mice (BALB and C57BL). The albino BALB strain Ss, which were reared under high illumination (128 ft-c), had higher activity and lower defecation scores than those reared under low illumination (4 ft-c); BALB Ss tested under low illumination (8 ft-c) had higher activity and lower defecation scores than those tested under high illumination (64 ft-c). The effects of rearing and test illumination on the open-field behavior of members of the pigmented C57BL strain were less pronounced.
