摘要
In this paper, for the very first time, the issues of the extent of, and variations in, spatial disparities of societal change in Austria are being discussed in detail. It is based on a systematically collected set of data including all pertinent and spatially disaggregated time series of the national censuses. The analysis as such was informed by the macro-level theories regarding present day's society currently deliberated in sociology. It is shown that the variance of the majority of the indicators of social change decreased, indicating that spatial disparities of social structures abated markedly. The ''agriculturally oriented society'' disappeared while an ''urban consumers' society'' spread, setting off a spatial standardization (''counterregionalization'').
