Enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to benzaldehyde in the presence of easily available, beta-hydroxysulfides 1 was investigated. The use of a catalytic amount of 1 gave (S)-1-phenylpropanol in excellent yield with high enantioselectivity, ranging from 85 to 88% ee.
