摘要
This essay analyzes the vision of Colombian independence consolidated by traditional historiography regarding popular participation. It goes on to explore the themes that the more recent historiography of this period has questioned and revised. Among these themes are: the independence wars as expressions of preexisting conflicts, the use of "the people" as a mechanism of pressure and legitimacy, the reduction of the terms of confrontation to simply republican vs. royalist camps, the reconstruction or articulation of republican discourse among popular sectors, and anti-republican indigenous mobilization. The article concludes by presenting some proposals aimed at enriching our understanding of the kinds of popular politics deployed in the course of the independence wars. .
