摘要：

The overall prognosis in ulcerative colitis is good and has improved with time. There is still an excess mortality particularly during the first few years after diagnosis. Colon cancer is the single most important factor affecting longterm prognosis. Newer surgical procedures have contributed to a decreased postoperative mortality, but the frequency of major postoperative complications is still high. Psychosocial prognosis in patient with ulcerative colitis is generally good, but improved counseling in sexual adjustment after surgery is needed.
