When an electron drift is produced along the magnetic held lines of a magnetized collisionless plasma, a number of low-frequency instabilities can be excited. One of these is the so-called potential relaxation instability (PRI), especially appearing in plasma diodes, thermionic converters and Q-machines. Tn this contribution, first a short review about the latest results on the PRI is given and then an experimental investigation is presented in which the PRI was seen to be quenched by electron/ion collisions, i.e. with increasing plasma density, the amplitude and coherence of the PRI dropped while the threshold voltage increased.
