BIOGENESIS OF VACCINIA - ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A SURFACE COMPONENT THAT ELICITS ANTIBODY SUPPRESSING INFECTIVITY AND CELL-CELL FUSION

Tubular structures that cover the surface of vaccinia were dissociated from pure virus and isolated in a polymeric state. These surface tubules (ST) appeared on polyacrylamide gels as a single polypeptide with a MW of 58,000. Rabbit antiserum prepared agains surface tubules neutralized virus infectivity [assayed in mouse fibroblast L2 cells] and suppressed [HeLa] cell fusion. Pure ST blocked the neutralizing capacity of rabbit antiserum against whole virus and the ST. The biological functions of ST in cell-virus and cell-cell interactions are discussed.
