EFFECTS OF STRESS ON SEGREGATION OF PHOSPHORUS AND SULFUR TO PRIOR AUSTENITE GRAIN-BOUNDARIES IN CHROMIUM STEELS

Effects of tensile stress on the intergranular segregation of phosphorus and sulfur in the tempering of low carbon steels containing 1. 7% Cr and 2. 5% Cr were investigated by means of Auger electron emission spectroscopy. The intergranular segregation of phosphorus was found to be enhanced by tensile loading. However, the concentration of sulfur at the grain boundaries in steels containing phosphorus was decreased by loading. These results were interpreted in terms of the boundary structure.
